Rich cards to enhance mobile users’ online experience
Google recently premiered rich cards, a new feature aimed at improving mobile users’ online experience. Rich cards function similarly to rich snipppets, with the goal of providing “an even more engaging and visual format.” The feature is highly image–oriented, playing to mobile users’ preference for pictures rather than text to identify content.
Initially, Google is implementing rich cards for websites featuring recipes and movies, as both categories tend to include a lot of visual content. After this experimental stage, the search engine will open the feature to more diverse content categories.
Rich cards offer web designers a new opportunity to attract users to their website. By customizing their website’s rich snippet preview, web developers can offer an eye–catching image to appear in search results. In the case of recipes, uploading a photo of the finished product is often more informative to the user than descriptive text alone.
Google’s official press release includes in–depth information for web developers interested in implementing the feature on their websites. For more information, please see the Google Webmaster Central Blog…>
